The Diner

As I walk into the building,
I'm struck with a subtle sense of home.
The gentle laughter, joy of families chatting over food.
A rhythmic strumming of a guitar, filling the room with energy.

There's a child with his parent's phone, on a video call.
He brings his sister up to the guitarist with a childish smile.
I laugh at the familiar enjoyment of youth.

A man stands up from a knee, his face full of glee.
The music comes to a stop as it's announced to the room.
The room applauds the engagement, families cheering for the two.

My eyes swell with tears as I look down at my empty plate.
The joyous wonder of this restaurant truly a treat.

I've always missed this familiar feeling of home.
So I cry, feeling the sadness of being alone.
